About This Quote

After the death of her husband, the wife of a man in an Indian slum decided to leave everything behind. She walked out of her home, leaving all her money and property behind. She took only a small bag with her, filled with necessities that would keep her alive. After walking for many months, she reached the coast.

There, she was given shelter by an American missionary. When he heard her story, he asked if she wanted to return to India to be with her family. She refused.

She had made a promise to God to live life without attachments or expectations, so she looked forward to living life in America. As she began to settle in at the mission, she found that it was difficult to make friends there. Her fellow missionaries were very religious and focused on their work.

Their lives were dedicated to helping others around them, but they did not talk about themselves very much. The woman felt lonely and isolated at times. However, when one of her coworkers asked if she’d like to read a letter he’d received from home, she fell in love with the thought of hearing from family.

They wrote regularly for two years before they realized that their letters had become very different over time because she had become known as the “Indian girl” and they had become known as “the missionaries from India.” Fortunately, they were able to resolve the situation and communicate again as soon as possible. This story is quite sad because we can all relate to feeling lonely and isolated at times during our life here on earth. However, we should also understand that feeling disconnected from others is part of human existence and that we should continue to appreciate the people who are willing to reach out and place a caring hand on our shoulder when we fall down just like this lady did in this story.
